STOCKPORT EXPRESS May 2003
ONE-MAN SHOW IS RED HOT By Craig Archer Any one who follows Manchester United will be aware of the highs and lows, the excitement and expectation, the joy, the sheer joy of seeing the Reds score. All this and much, much more is encapsulated in the fabulous one-man stage show United, Despatches from Old Trafford a must for all United fans. Likeable Red (Burt) played by lifelong fan Kieron Smith, works as a tour guide at Old Trafford and goes through the day-to-day rigmarole of showing fans around the stadium. Embarrassed by the script pre written by the men in suits, Burt gives a wide-eyed tour party a 90-minute history of United through the eyes of a fan- a proper fan. FERGUSON He talks about the signing of King Cantona from Leeds, wining the European Cup, lads legend George Best and the hero that is Alex Ferguson. Barracked by the plc thought police through the voice of the beast, Burt continues to tell it how it is. He covers the tale of Billy Meredith in 1906 and hails the arrival of the Nevilles, Beckham, Butt, Scholes and Giggs to the club. The play is extremely funny and sometimes tragic and it provides a first class account of the history of Manchester United. Smith is a true supporter. He thinks and acts like a true fan over issues including the plc and selling the club to Murdoch and the prawn sandwich brigade. His delivery of the Munich air disaster was absolutely amazing. The theatre fell silent and the guy sitting in front of me wiped tears from his eyes- it was pure emotion. If you are a United fan, please go and see Despatches-it proves that thousands of us out there share the same feelings and thoughts. If you are not a United fan go and see it, its brilliant. |
